Twilight on the Potomac

It was a quiet Labor Day evening on the Potomac River. I expected more people; all I saw was one kayaker a great distance off and one outboard motorboat with two fishermen, who told me they’d had quite a haul.

The egrets were definitely having a time of it. Watching them fish is a study in patience and quickness. I didn’t bring a lens longer than my old 105mm, so made it a game to see how close (and quietly) I could maneuver my canoe to them before they spooked.

I don’t usually stay out on the river so late, but the calm and quiet were a tonic and the evening light was quietly spectacular as well. Here’s what it looked like to me.

Approaching the Monocacy Aqueduct before heading out into the Potomac. This historic structure carried the C&O canal over the Monocacy River.
As the summer progresses aquatic plants begin to clog the surface of the Potomac. Some years they get so bad it’s hard to canoe. Here they just add interest to the reflection of the sky.
A great blue heron quietly stalks his meal. These guys will not let you get close, and when you try they often take wing with a loud squawk of displeasure.

  1. Thanks for posting! My hearbeat is now back in the ideal zone after having a virtual canoe ride. The aquaduct photograph is lovely. One special place…

  2. Just so utterly breathe taking what you capture; and how you bring it in a photo. Makes wanna sail that canoe and not think about nothing else around me. Peacefulness on the Potomac….beautiful!
