Beech tree at dusk

I first was attracted to the lone leaves clinging to a few branches of this beech, but then got distracted by the pattern of the tips of branches over the stream below. I was focusing on them with great intensity when I accidentally bumped a branch with my head, which set all its branches swaying slightly. My exposures by that point were longer than 1 second (it was nearly dark) so I realized I would have to come back to photograph when it was perfectly still again.

Now I’ve been back to photograph this tree four times, and probably will continue shooting it as the seasons progress. Here are a few of my early impressions of it.

It was so dark when I shot this I had to focus with a mini flashlight, then exposed for 30 sec while painting the roots with the flashlight from the left. Then I had to brighten it up further in Lightroom…

  1. Beautiful! i would have been drawn to it, too. i especially love the blue-grey hues, the clean, barren lines and the glitter from the melting ice and snow. i love the leaves just waiting to flutter to the ground also. Good call!
